The program modules have been designed to facilitate becoming a highly sought-after International Make-up Artist. To obtain your international diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects, Hair & Media Makeup you will have to attend full-time classes, submit various practical projects for each module as well as pass the international exam. Our qualified teachers are always on site to teach and assist every student, subsequently giving them the individual attention that they require to obtain their qualification.
You do not need a Matric (Grade12) Certificate, however, the minimum age requirement is 16 years of age

Anatomy & physiology
This section aims to provide the student with knowledge on the skin and its properties as well as skin diseases & disorders. In addition, it also investigates the muscular, skeletal, lymphatic and cardiovascular systems as well as the properties of hair & nails. Understanding the theory behind anatomy & physiology will therefore lay the foundation for the principles of make-up.
The student will be taught how to use camouflage make-up for all skin types and colors to hide imperfections and accentuate the natural beauty of an individual. In this section students will learn how to cover different skin imperfections and scenarios, for instance covering:
- Atrophic scar tissue
- Hypertrophic scar tissue
- Keloid scar
- Hyper- or hypo-pigmented skin
- Erythema as well as
Applying make-up for various occasions
Students will acquire the skills to provide make-up for various occasions and will be able to work with a variety of skin types. In addition, they will also learn to apply a wide range of make-up products to different skin tones and age groups.
Make-up looks taught in this section includes:
- Day make-up
- Evening make-up
- Special occasion make-up
- Color photographic make-up
- Bridal make-up
- Make-up for mature skin as well as
- Ethnic make-up
Students will further dive into subjects like highlighting & contouring, corrective make-up and study the principles of color and how to apply it in detail.
Fashion & photographic make-up
In this unit students will gain the skills to design and apply fashion and photographic make-up as well as combine current fashion trends, historical or period and special occasion make-up. In addition, students will also learn about make-up for both color and black and white photography.

Design & application of face & body art
This section will cover various aspects of the application of face and body art, with training on design aspects, techniques, colors, and products. Themes that will be covered in this section includes:
- Tattoo design & paint
- Kids fantasy face paint
- Animal face paint
- Hannibal paint
- Sponge techniques as well as
- 3D face art design
This module will teach students about special effects and media make‑up and subsequently, get exposure to the media industry. They will gain the necessary skills to work on any television, film or theater set.
Students will learn how to create casualty effects and character looks, through the application of small prosthetics.
Themes covered in this section includes:
- theater lighting and how it affects make-up
- Soaping out hair and eyebrows
- Creating casualty effects like chopped of fingers, burns, grazes, bruises, bullet wounds, cuts, bites, stitches.
- Latex ageing & theatrical ageing
- Bald cap making & application as well as
- Beard application
It will also focus on various make-up looks and applications, such as:
- Ballet make-up
- Period make-up
- Greek make-up
- Renaissance make-up
- Kabuki make-up as well as
- Pantomime character design & application.
In this unit students will be applying airbrush make-up to the face and body. They will get familiar with different airbrush make-up designs and techniques, in addition to learning how to use a range of airbrush products.

The aim of this unit is to develop skills to use a variety of conventional and non-conventional hair styling techniques to produce innovative, fashionable and creative looks.
Students will develop the ability to combine and adapt a variety of styling and finishing methods, as a result, being able to produce individual finished effects. Styling techniques included in this unit includes:
- Blow drying
- Pin curling
- Finger waving
- Use of heated styling equipment
Create and cast small prosthetic pieces and bald caps
This unit is about creating small prosthetic pieces such as ears, noses, chins and bald caps.
In this unit students will gain knowledge on products used to create prosthesis, such as gelatin, cap plastic, latex, clay, alginate and silicone. They will also be taught the various techniques used to created prosthesis such as:
- Application and removal of bald cap
- Positive casting
- Negative casting
Outcomes of this unit includes producing small prosthetic pieces such as:
- Bald cap
- Small prosthesis
Application of prosthetic pieces
Through this unit you will learn about applying, blending, and coloring small prosthetic pieces such as ears, noses, chins and bald caps. In addition, students will also learn about the safe removal of prosthesis, as well as storage and cleaning methods. Students will have to apply certain techniques such as application, blending, coloring and removal to apply small prosthetic pieces.
Types of prosthesis that students will need to successfully apply:

Style and fit Postiche
The aim of this unit is to develop skills in advanced level in fitting, styling, and dressing various types of postiche. Students will analyse the hair skin and scalp, identify the type of hair style to be worn, choose the correct type of postiche, incorporate the postiche into the hair design, use a form of ornamentation as well as advise the client on cleaning and maintenance.
Students will have to be able to apply different types of Postiche like a Wig, Toupee, Hair piece and Weft with the knowledge they gained on products, tools, and equipment.
In addition to the main focus areas mentioned above, students will also be trained in other aspects such as:
- Monitoring & maintaining health & safety practices in the salon.
- Client care & communication in beauty related industries.
- Product promotion and services to clients in a salon.
- Designing & applying Mehndi skin decoration as well as
- Creating an image based on a theme within the hair & beauty sector.
Students will acquire skills in a supervisory role focusing on health and safety within a salon and therefore be taught to recognize salon hazards, carry out risk assessments as well as implement the necessary actions.
In addition they will learn about client care and communication in beauty-related industries and taught how to adapt client care and communication skills, to the needs of different clients, as well as learn how to manage client expectations.
Students will develop a sound knowledge of products and services offered in salons as well as learn to promote these products and services by providing accurate information, describing the benefits and features to clients, being able to identify buying signals, secure an agreement and most importantly, close a sale.
This one-year full-time International Diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects, Hair & Media Makeup includes 2 different International qualifications:
